Prime Baby

Sylvia yawned as she scrolled through her Amazon Deals of the Day. Dog shampoo, probiotics, gourmet popcorn, printer paper. She paused before scrolling past a fuzzy baby blanket. The baby blanket was light yellow and had daisies embroidered along the edge. Underneath the price of the blanket was a banner of blue lettering that she had never seen before. "Now included with Prime Birth." Sylvia clicked on the banner.

Sylvia met Mark in front of the Amazon Hospital on a Tuesday afternoon.

"Thanks for leaving work early" she said. She slid her hand into Mark's as they walked to the hospital entrance. Inside, they met their Prime Birth Consultant, a cheerful woman named Linda.

"We've been thinking about having a baby," Sylvia said, looking at Mark. "But both Mark and I are busy people. Mark just got a promotion at work and my startup is gaining traction. But we heard about Prime Birth and think it could be a good option for us."

"Well, you've come to the right place," said Linda, handing them each a brochure and a Prime Birth pen. "Prime Birth is the easiest way to have a baby because we take care of everything! All the baby supplies: the crib, the diapers, the formula, will arrive on your doorstep. We'll send you parenting material through Prime Video, and of course we'll modify your Prime Now grocery delivery to include baby food." Linda smiled at Sylvia and Mark.  "A Prime Birth is the perfect option for busy parents. And the best part is, Amazon hospitals offer exclusive discounts for Prime members." She pulled out an iPad and leaned forward to show them the deals.

"Looks like the Deal of the Day is 20% off all C-sections."

Sylvia tapped the edge of the desk with her Prime Birth pen as she thought.

"I can tell you're not completely sold, Sylvia." Linda said. What are you most worried about? Is it the price? Or is it the..."

            "It's the two-day delivery."

Linda chuckled. "I understand how you feel. Two days is a fast turnaround from conception to birth. But a lot of couples are thankful they chose Prime Birth. Over fifteen thousand people have left a five-star review." She handed the iPad back to Sylvia and Mark so they could scroll through the reviews. Many of the reviews included pictures of smiling newborns.

"I understand if you need time to decide," Linda said. "After all," she winked. "Prime Birth is the only Amazon service that doesn't offer free returns."

That night, Sylvia found herself sweating underneath her Amazon Essentials sheets. After a few minutes, she rolled over to face Mark.

"Mark, I think I want to do it. I want to have a Prime Baby," Mark grabbed Sylvia and kissed her face.

"Let's do it! Let's have a baby!" he yelled. He pulled Sylvia up against his body.

"If we start tonight, it will be delivered by weekend," Mark said, with a playful smile. “Alexa, dim the lights”

"Alexa, play “Let’s Get it on”" Sylvia giggled back.

After conceiving their baby on Tuesday night, Mark and Sylvia found themselves in a rush to inform their family and friends. Sylvia's boss was surprisingly understanding and told her to take a whole week off for the birth. By Wednesday, Mark and Sylvia put together a guest list for the baby shower, and they scheduled it for the following afternoon. Luckily, their friends were also Prime members, so all the gifts arrived on time. Mark's mother was the first to arrive to the baby shower, and when Sylvia opened the door she presented her with a bouquet of lilies.

"My first grandchild!" Mark's mother gushed. "I can't wait to meet the baby. I'll come over on Sunday after Pilates."

On Saturday, Sylvia was halfway through an episode of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel when she felt her water break. She and Mark rushed to the Amazon Hospital and were relieved to find Linda waiting for them inside. Linda held Sylvia's hand and Mark held the other as her contractions grew closer together. After a grueling fifteen minutes, the baby tumbled out into the doctor's arms.

"It's a Prime member!" the doctor cooed, and everyone in the room cheered. Sylvia cradled her baby's bald head.

"He looks just like a little Jeff Bezos." she said, smiling up at Mark. "That's what I want to name him, Jeffrey Bezos Heaton-Park." Sylvia traced her finger around her baby's tiny head. She stared at her son, her creation, until her eyes became shiny under the fluorescent lights.

"Sign him up for a Prime Rewards Credit Card," she whispered. "This kid is going to get some fantastic deals"
